Baumpflanzprojekte 2024: Der NIKIN Impact im Rückblick

January: Reforestation in the Sierras Grandes, Argentina

In January, we supported reforestation in Argentina with One Tree Planted to revitalize areas severely damaged by fires and intensive livestock farming.

  • Trees planted: 26,914 Polylepis trees
  • Project objective: improving soil stability, promoting biodiversity and increasing the amount of water in rivers
  • Further details: Protection and reforestation of stony and dry soils, establishment of five working groups: site selection, livestock fencing, tree nursery, planting and monitoring, strengthening of the local community through new jobs

February: Protecting the Polylepis forests in the Andes

In February, our focus was on the high-altitude forest ecosystems of the Andes. Together with One Tree Planted and Acción Andina, we planted native trees to preserve habitats and strengthen communities.

        • Trees planted: 11,743
        • Countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Peru
        • Project objectives: Protection of native Polylepis forests, creation of local jobs and capacity building, promotion of biodiversity and water supply

March: Reforestation in Canada and Kenya

In March, we supported projects in two countries to combat wildfires in Canada and coastal erosion in Kenya.

            Canada:
            • Location: Cariboo and Alberta, British Columbia
            • Trees planted: 10,500
            • Objective: Restoration of burned forest areas through natural regeneration and support of indigenous communities
            Kenya:
            • Location: Likoni River Delta, Kwale
            • Trees planted: 15,183 mangroves
            • Objective: Stabilize coastal areas and improve income sources through sustainable fishing

April: Reforestation at the Rietenberg Forestry Company, Switzerland

In April, we supported the Swiss forest with our Forest Collection. For every TreeShirt sold, we donated a tree to the Rietenberg forestry company to help rebuild the forest in Aargau that had been damaged by the bark beetle.

            • Trees planted: 500
            • Project objectives: Restoration of an important ecosystem, protection of the livelihood of animals and plants

We are also particularly proud of our TreePlanting Day in Krauchtal, in the canton of Bern, where we planted around 300 trees together with QoQa and the community.

            May: Mauna Kea Restoration, Hawaii

In May, we supported a long-term project aimed at restoring native forests in Hawaii and protecting them from wildfires.

            • Trees planted: 22,643
            • Region: Mauna Kea, Hawaii
            • Project objectives: Protection of native flora and fauna, control of invasive species and forest fires

                      June: Agroforestry in Thailand

In June, we supported One Tree Planted, a project in northern Thailand that promotes biodiversity and food security through sustainable agriculture.

                      • Trees planted: 10,283
                      • Region: Mae Na Wong, Mae Yang Mint and surrounding areas
                      • Project objectives: Promote agroforestry and sustainable nutrition, increase biodiversity by 40%

                            July–September: Mangrove restoration in Guatemala

Over the summer, we supported a project restoring mangrove forests along Guatemala's Pacific coast to combat coastal erosion and promote biodiversity.

                            • Trees planted: 70,572
                            • Region: Departments of San Marcos, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez

                                              Total impact 2024

The tree-planting projects we supported had diverse positive effects on nature and people. Each project focuses on a different topic. But this lasting impact is only possible thanks to you, our dedicated community. Together, we were able to plant 252,836 trees in 13 countries this year , thus contributing to restoring ecosystems and protecting our planet.

Since the beginning of NIKIN, we have planted a total of 2,465,808 trees . We have set ourselves an ambitious goal for 2025: to break the 3 million mark – with your support, we can do it! Let's continue to grow together and make our world greener, tree by tree.
