A biome that deserves more attention
The Cerrado is often overlooked when it comes to saving Brazil's forests. While the Amazon rainforest receives global attention, the Cerrado receives little media attention. This biome is equally important to the global ecosystem.
The Cerrado :
- Home to 5% of all animal and plant species worldwide .
- Contains over 12,000 different species , many of which are found only here.
- 50% of it has already been destroyed by agriculture and deforestation .
Our goal is not only to reforest the Cerrado , but also to raise awareness that there is more than just the Amazon that needs protection and help.
The goal: 150,000 trees by the end of 2025
By the end of 2025, we and our partner aim to plant 150,000 native trees – including the tamboril tree , a particularly important tree species for this biome. Thanks to the support of our community, the NIKIN donation will enable us to plant 80,000 of these 150,000 trees . This project is one of the largest we have supported to date , and we are proud to be actively contributing to preserving this unique habitat.
Hydrogel: A solution for better survival chances
A question we are often asked is: “How do you ensure that the planted seedlings survive?” In this project, we use an innovative method to increase the survival chances of the planted seedlings: hydrogel .
- The hydrogel is a powder that is added to the water.
- It hydrates and is introduced into the soil next to the roots of the seedlings.
- It gradually releases the stored water so that the seedlings are supplied with moisture even during dry periods.
- With every rain, the hydrogel rehydrates, thus continuing to supply the plants.
This method ensures that the trees have optimal conditions to take root and grow.
A community project with heart
This project is not only for NIKIN and our partner Instituto Terrenus is of great importance , but also for the local population. Around 50 volunteers have already actively participated in the planting. It's especially wonderful to see how enthusiastically children help and discover their connection to nature.
For local families, it's important to pass these values on to the next generation. They understand how important it is to protect nature and ensure a sustainable future. The children's joy and commitment demonstrate that we're not just planting trees here, but also fostering awareness and a sense of responsibility.
