The path to Spatz

His connection with Spatz did not begin as an outsider but directly within the company. "I went to Spatz because I was outdoors a lot," says Diego. But his time there was marked by changes. The company ran into difficulties, and production was eventually moved abroad. For him, that was a turning point.

"Then I decided to become self-employed because I believe you can make tents in Switzerland." With this conviction, he founded Zelthangar – and pursued a clear vision: high-quality tents, produced in Switzerland, combined with strong service for those who are outdoors. "Switzerland needs service. Youth groups need a contact person."

Two years in a tent

The path there was anything but ordinary. To fully concentrate on building his company, Diego lived in a tent for two years. An experience that still shapes him today. "The pressure was extremely high and at the same time, I wanted that too." Despite all challenges he looks back positively on this time : "There was no other way, but it was also cool, honestly. I thought it was really cool, I would do it again today!"

This time not only helped him to clearly define and achieve his goals, but also to sharpen his focus on what truly matters. "You're back at the very bottom of Maslow's pyramid, but you also realize what's really important and can brutally focus your energy and money." At the same time, it also meant that he could test his products under real conditions: "I tested the tent myself that I sell."

Spatz flies back to Switzerland

Spatz never let him go during all these years. With Zelthangar, the opportunity finally arose to bring the brand back. "We were now able to buy Spatz back and produce it in Switzerland again." A step that has not only economic but also emotional significance – back to the roots, back to what Spatz has always stood for.

This very understanding is also reflected in the collaboration with NIKIN. Both share the demand for quality, durability, and a genuine closeness to nature. "NIKIN, like us, is committed to quality and sustainability. They also have a strong connection to youth groups," says Diego. And he adds with a wink: "Nicholas and Robin are just 'cool dudes' just like us, so it's a great match."

Continuing the story

This shared attitude has resulted in products that combine functionality and history. The Spatz Bivouac Poncho is more than just a poncho – it can be set up as a one-person tent and is therefore made for true outdoor moments. Well-thought-out, versatile, and functional, this limited product is made for real adventurers.

The Spatz Necessaire is designed for use in a tent. Made from tent fabric scraps from production, each piece is unique. Limited, produced in Switzerland, and made for on-the-go – inspired by the very materials that have defined Spatz for decades.

Thus, the collaboration with NIKIN becomes not only a joint project but a connection of values, memories, and the vision of rethinking outdoor experiences for the next generation. The story of Spatz is far from over. It continues to be written – by people like Diego, who are willing to break new ground without forgetting their roots.
