Earth Day: Tag der Wertschätzung für unsere Erde - NIKIN CH

In times of global crisis, we are once again reminded that we are all human beings and that we can only overcome such a crisis together. We are all in the same boat and can only reach safe shores through cooperation, solidarity, and mutual understanding. But Corona is by no means the only challenge our generation faces – changes in the global climate, the sustainable use of resources, and the preservation and protection of vital natural environments are also tasks that we can only tackle and master together. On April 22nd, International Earth Day, over 175 countries worldwide aim to strengthen appreciation for our planet's diverse natural environments and draw attention to problems. Earth Day events are held around the globe to give back to the Earth and highlight grievances.

Origin of International Earth Day

Earth Day has existed for over 50 years. The name and concept were first proposed in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco. The founder was John McConnell, an American peace and environmental activist. The first Earth Day was to be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This day was later manifested by the UN as a global day of action. Earth Day then merged with an environmental action day held annually on April 22, which particularly highlighted the problems of consumer behavior. Since 1970, environmental actions have therefore always taken place on April 22. On the first Earth Day in 1970, around 20 million people participated in such actions, at that time only in the USA and today around the globe.

What does Earth Day want and what can you do?

On International Earth Day, actions take place worldwide that advocate for the climate, but also for science and education, people and communities, conservation and restoration, and against plastic and pollution. Earth Day also wants to motivate every single person to rethink their personal consumption behavior and make it more sustainable in the future. If everyone reduces their own ecological footprint, a lot has already been done. More information about International Earth Day can be found here. How big is your ecological footprint and what can you do to reduce it? You can find out with this test.

We act in the spirit of Earth Day

As a sustainable clothing and lifestyle brand, we therefore appeal to you to pay attention to sustainable materials and production when buying clothes and accessories and not to be dazzled by cheap offers from environmentally damaging fast fashion. We stand for fair and sustainable materials and production of our products. Most of our products are manufactured in Europe, which prevents long and environmentally harmful transport routes. Wherever possible, we use sustainable alternatives to conventional materials, which various sustainability certifications can attest to and which we also transparently disclose. We use tree-free paper (made from waste from the sugar cane industry) in everyday life and proper recycling is also particularly important to us.
