Meteorological spring begins on March 20th. The awakening nature and warming rays of sunshine lure people back out into the fresh air. The approaching spring has a lot to offer – here are some of the activities you can look forward to in spring.
Soon it will be that time again: spring is just around the corner, even for humans the “hibernation” is coming to an end and we can finally go outside into nature again.
What everyone enjoys…
When the days get longer, the sun shines more often, and the air smells different, you're naturally drawn to the outdoors. Nature lovers have the choice between landscaped and "free" nature:
- Excursions to parks and gardens
No matter where you live, there are small or large green spaces, parks, or botanical gardens nearby. There's a lot going on there in spring – some trees are already blooming before the rest of nature turns green. Early bloomers are also already awake – snowdrops, daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips are competing for their spring blooms. Fruit trees are preparing their blossoms for bees, and the fluffy catkins cover the branches with their splendor. So: get out there!
- Forests in the near and far surroundings
In the forest, if you are as mindful and attentive as possible, you can observe nature's awakening even better. The returning birds are now making their presence felt, and in deciduous and mixed forests, the first green leaves are appearing. You can feel the forest breathing a sigh of relief after winter. Those out alone or in very small groups can simply sit down and unwind, taking in the forest scents, sounds, and colors. If you are very quiet and patient, there is a good chance of observing smaller wild animals like deer going about their daily business.
Planting flowers – when, if not now?
Spring is the season for flowers, and you can bring them indoors, too. Flower bulbs work particularly well. You can plant the first bulbs as early as the beginning of February. If you leave them weekly between them, brightly colored flowers will bloom on your windowsill at intervals until April. Skilled gardeners can also prepare the bulbs for the next winter starting in the summer.
Picnic in the countryside
If the weather permits, simply pack a basket of treats and head out into the countryside. Find a sunny spot and enjoy a picnic – why not? You can customize it however you like. There's almost nothing better for children.
But be careful, spring is also tick season. These small insects can transmit dangerous diseases, so always wear closed shoes and long pants in the forest. Once you get home, it's worth doing a thorough body check.
Spring cooking
In spring, there are special culinary delights that you can pick yourself or buy fresh. It doesn't always have to be the first strawberries. Wild garlic is also a hit. From late March until April, this "wild garlic" grows with its distinctive fragrance and flavor. Not only does it smell wonderful in the forest, but it's also perfect for making fresh pesto or salad. Those who want to pick it themselves should be careful not to confuse the leaves with the highly poisonous lily of the valley. Both plants love the same habitats, but wild garlic releases its garlicky scent when the leaves are rubbed.
Nature activities with children
Children who have barely been able to play outside all winter are even more excited than adults when the inviting outdoors opens its doors again. They head outside with bikes, badminton rackets, and balls. But a walk in the woods or garden is also fun, especially when you encourage the little ones to identify flowers, trees, and animals.
At home, you can create "fact sheets" with pictures of birch, beech, and other trees, and then send the children off to find as many trees and plants as possible. Small prizes for the most enthusiastic plant detectives? Coloring books with plant motifs or, for older children, a plant identification book.
There are more than enough opportunities to enjoy spring!
These are, of course, just a few of the many ways to finally breathe deeply at the end of winter, have fun, and enjoy nature to the fullest. There are also guided hikes and walks, some especially for families with children, such as those organized by the Alpine Club, as well as sporting activities and cultural events such as concerts, once the weather cooperates. They all have one thing in common – they allow us to consciously enjoy nature!
