A sustainable commitment to Thailand's forests
The project, which is part of our long-term collaboration with Hilltribe communities , takes place in six catchment areas in northern Thailand : Mae Na Wong, Nam Kohk , Mae Ta Chang, Mae Yang Mint and two new areas, Mae Chaem 1 and Mae Chaem 2. This region, close to the city of Chiang Rai and the border with Myanmar, has a history of violence and exploitation of ethnic minorities.
The project works closely with 448 households, including 35 community forests, and plans to double the number of partner households to 1,100 families by the end of 2025. A total of around 1.3 million trees are to be planted and 188,900 hectares of land restored during this time. Thanks to the support of NIKIN and our community, 9,367 trees will be planted this year. Our commitment is focused on ecological, economic, and social goals to sustainably strengthen the region. Want to know where else we're planting trees? More than planting trees: The goals of the project
The tree planting project in Thailand goes far beyond reforestation. Here are some of its key goals and impact areas:
- Promoting biodiversity and habitats
Planting trees such as mango, avocado or coffee strengthens biodiversity, revitalizes soils, improves water supplies and stabilizes the climate.
- Protection of watersheds and soils
Measures such as small dams and water reservoirs prevent erosion and ensure access to clean water – especially during the dry season.
- Strengthening communities
Through training in agroforestry and soil conservation, families achieve higher crop yields, improve their livelihoods, and can invest in education and local projects.
- Support for women and disadvantaged groups
58% of participants are women, often in leadership roles. The project promotes their social status and provides more girls with access to education.

Why Thailand? Why this project?
Thailand is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, but many regions struggle with the consequences of deforestation and environmental destruction . Ethnic minorities, who often have limited access to land and resources, are particularly affected. The project combines ecological regeneration with social change and focuses on working with these communities to sustainably secure their livelihoods.
Through training courses like the Farmer Field Schools , participants learn how to plant trees, maintain tree nurseries, and implement new cultivation techniques. At the same time, they create a long-term awareness of environmental protection.
Together for a sustainable future
With our support in February 2025, we are helping to further advance this important project. By planting 9,367 trees, we are making a further contribution to a greener and fairer world. Our commitment to the environment goes beyond planting trees. We believe in the power of community and that together we can make the world a better place. Would you like to get involved?
