What is behind the Day of Good Deeds?
Good Deed Day is a Switzerland-wide initiative launched in 2020 by Coop, among others, together with partner organizations. The idea behind it: to create a day each year on which we all consciously take time to do something good for others – be it for fellow human beings, animals, or the environment. This isn't about grand gestures or perfect actions, but rather genuine, everyday helpfulness.
The day aims to demonstrate that commitment is not a question of size, but of attitude. And the more people participate, the greater the impact.

How you can do good – ideas for your day of good deeds:
For the environment
Our environment needs protection – and every small action can help. Here are a few ideas for how you can get involved on Good Deed Day (and beyond):
- Collect trash: An empty plastic bottle here, a cigarette there – what seems like small things quickly adds up. Grab gloves and a bag and turn your walk into a mini cleanup .
- Take recycling seriously: Not everything belongs in the household waste. Batteries, old cell phones, and electronic devices, in particular, contain substances that must be disposed of properly. Take the time and bring them to an official collection point – this will protect the soil, water, and air.
- Plant a tree: A tree is more than just a beautiful sight – it provides shade, filters CO₂, and provides habitat for animals. If you don't have space to plant one, you can also symbolically plant a tree by purchasing a NIKIN product.
- Build an insect hotel: Wild bees and other insects are finding it hard to find shelter in many gardens and cities. With a homemade insect hotel, you can create habitat – and support the pollination of plants right on your doorstep.
- Sow a flower meadow or add greenery to your balcony: Instead of lawns or stone surfaces, native wildflowers provide valuable food for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Even a few pots on your windowsill can make a difference.
- Cycling or walking: Short trips are perfect for sustainable mobility. You save CO₂, get some fresh air, and see your surroundings from a new perspective.
- Less food waste: Food waste is a huge problem – but easy to avoid. Plan your meals, buy only what you really need, and be creative with leftovers . Maybe someone will appreciate leftover food – sharing is also a good deed.

For other people:
Doing good often starts small – with an open mind, an honest word, or a moment of genuine attention. Here are a few suggestions for how you can make others happy:
- Neighbors help: Whether it's elderly people, single parents, or newcomers – every neighborhood has people who need help. A quick shopping trip, a chat over the garden fence, or a helping hand with carrying things can make everyday life easier and create real connections.
- Give someone a sincere compliment: A sincere compliment has the power to brighten someone's day. Whether you're praising someone's creativity, kindness, or outfit—say what you think. It costs nothing and goes a long way.
- Give the gift of time: Time is one of the most precious gifts we can give. Visit someone you haven't seen in a while, invite them for coffee, or just really listen—without distractions.
- Helping out at an animal shelter or a charity: Many organizations welcome helping hands – whether it's walking the dog at the shelter, helping with environmental work, or participating in a fundraising event. A good deed that's good not only for others but also for yourself.
- Write a postcard or message: When was the last time you just wrote to someone? A short greeting, a thank you, or a few words of encouragement can arrive at just the right moment and make a big difference.
- Smile instead of scrolling: In the digital world, we sometimes lose sight of what's real. While waiting for the bus, don't look at your phone – instead, smile at the people around you. Who knows how much you'll trigger.
