Why mangrove forests are so important
Mangrove forests are far more than just impressive coastal landscapes—they are an essential part of the ecosystem and a vital source of livelihood for the people of Kenya's coastal regions. Unfortunately, these precious forests have been severely depleted in recent decades, threatening both the environment and the livelihoods of local communities.

The challenge
Kenya's coast is one of the least developed regions in the country and heavily dependent on mangrove ecosystems. Due to massive urbanization and a lack of sustainable management, mangrove forests have been overexploited and converted for other purposes. This has resulted in shoreline instability and the loss of habitats for many marine organisms. This places an additional burden on communities already living in poverty.

The goal: to restore mangrove forests
Together with veritree, one of our tree-planting partners, we are committed to restoring mangrove forests in Kenya. The goal of this project is to empower local communities and help them break the cycle of poverty. The restored mangrove forests not only provide valuable habitats for many species, but also serve as a protective barrier against tropical storms and provide the community with new sources of income, such as sustainable fishing and harvesting.

A look into the future: Merciline's story
Merciline, a mother of seven, is an example of the positive impact reforestation can have on local communities. Before participating in the project, she knew little about the importance of mangroves to fisheries and her community. Today, she is a passionate conservation advocate and committed to sustainable harvesting methods. Her efforts demonstrate the importance of involving people in restoration efforts to achieve long-term success.

How the impact is measured
The success of this project depends largely on the careful monitoring and care of the newly planted trees. Regular inventory checks and modern monitoring methods, such as the use of drones, help document mangrove growth and respond to challenges early on. The project will enable the restoration of mangrove forests on Kenya's coast. And by protecting these vital ecosystems, they contribute to securing the livelihoods of local communities and preserving the environment in the long term.
